Spanish Steps

Where: Rome, Italy
When: February 5, 2012
With: Loren and Rachel

As if by accident, we stumbled upon the Spanish Steps. Built in 1717, they were built as a result of a contest to provide a way to get up to the church at the top of the steep hill. They are now the widest staircase in all of Europe. Usually a nice place to sit and drink a glass of wine, they looked a bit treacherous with all the snow covering them, so we were content to admire from the bottom.

In front of the steps, there is this fountain (Fontana della Barcaccia), built in 1627-29. And in front of this little boat, there is a platform-like thing.

I really dropped the ball on this next part. I should have gotten a better picture, but I didn't believe what I was seeing. To the left of the boat, on that little platform, was a little old man who climbed out onto the platform to drink from the water spouting from the fountain. Not only was it freezing, is that safe!?! Probably, I would hope so, but still, at first glance, I was surprised.
