Where: Florence, Italy
When: February 9, 2012
What: Rachel and Loren
It was really lucky that we just happened to wander into this square. It was beautiful! It was once the hub of Florentine political life...now its a hub for tourists.
One of the focal points of the square is the Fountain of Neptune. It was commissioned for the wedding of one of the Medici's and actually, its face was made to resemble a Medici (the Medici's were EVERYWHERE.) Surprisingly, the Florentines hated this statue, calling it the white giant and hanging their wash on it.
The Piazza was also the spot where the original David stood. Now, it's been replaced by a replica...a replica I can take pictures of.
Off to the side of the Palazzo is a little area called the Loggia dei Lanzi that contains a bunch of replicas of famous Florentine sculptures.

Also standing in front of the Palazzo Vecchio is the statue of Hercules and Cacus.

Here is Perseus and the Head of Medusa
Rape of the Sabine Woman
Rape of Polyxena and Hercules & Centaur (not exactly a group of happy statues)
