Where: Rome, Italy
When: February 5, 2012
With: Loren and Rachel
After climbing a long staircase, we reached the Piazza del Campidoglio. It was planned out by none other than Michelangelo in the 1500s by request of the pope. He also designed the exteriors of the three museums that flank the edges of the piazza, the Capitolines.
Apparently, despite having planned the piazza, Michelangelo was not a fan of this statue of Marcus Aurelius in the middle of it.
At the back of the piazza is the Palazzo Senatorio. Michelangelo designed the two side staircases in the front, and it is now used as Rome's city hall.
In front of the palazzo are the river gods of the Nile (shown on the left) and the Tiber, and in the middle is a statue of Minerva, goddess of Rome.
We didn't get to enter any of the Capitoline museums, so this was the end of our time here. For the rest of our trip in Rome, click here.
