Bocca della Verita

Where: Rome, Italy
When: February 5, 2011
With: Loren and Rachel

La Bocca della Verita (the Mouth of Truth) is a large carved stone in the shape of a face. It may have once been part of a 1st century fountain or perhaps even a manhole cover. But it is now famous as being a most unfortunate lie detector - supposedly if you stick your hand in its mouth and tell a lie, it will clamp down and bite it off. This was all made famous in the Audrey Hepburn / Gregory Peck movie, Roman Holiday

I am happy to report that my hand remains in tact; however, the grumpy security guard hurried us along so quickly through the picture, I didn't have much time to test it out.

After passing our honesty test, we were sent to church. The church of Santa Maria in Cosmedin is the building that maintains the Bocca. Supposedly the bones of St. Valentine are kept here. It was small, but lovely.
