Fisherman's Wharf

Where: San Francisco, California
When: October 7, 2010 / June 17, 2014
With: Me / Dave

Fisherman's Whalf in San Francisco has become the unfortunate tourist hub of the city. I say unfortunate because it is so beautiful, sitting on the San Francisco Bay with views of the Golden Gate Bridge, Alcatraz, and the mountains. However, it has all that comes with a tourist haven - a lot of people, souvenir shops, and overpriced restaurants.

But a trip to San Francisco wouldn't be complete without a visit here. Actually, the entire walk along the bay is gorgeous, starting down at the Ferry Building and working north along the Embarcadero. A wide sidewalk follows along the water, with cable cars whizzing past and lots of shops and restaurants along the way. There's also a decent amount of artwork to keep senses completely stimulated.

Upon hitting Pier 39, the touristy traits of this walk are in full swing, with a large, two-story shopping plaza packed with visitors. However, this is also where some of San Francisco's iconic residents live: the sea lions! Barking away on their floating dock by Pier 39, these loud, smelly guys showed up in 1989 (just before an earthquake) and have been coming back ever since.

Just past the sea lions is the start of the official Fisherman's Wharf.

Upon our arrival, we decided to start out with a San Francisco delicacy for lunch: a sourdough bread bowl. Whether its filled with bisque or a chowder, this bowl is the best way to enjoy it.

Further down the wharf sits the Musée Mécanique, a museum containing penny arcade games from the early 2oth century. Stepping in here feels like going back in time.

What would a wharf be without some boats?

The main catch around this area: dungeness crab. Mmmm delicious.

Walking just a touch further west is the end of the Wharf at Ghiradelli Square.

We pitched up a the Ghiradelli to split a hot fudge sundae to end our day.

It may be touristy, but the food is good and the view is stunning! There's a reason all the people flock here!
