940. Quito

Where: Quito, Ecuador
When: May 24, 2008
With: Rachel

So I will be the first to admit that my Quito post is incredibly weak.

For Rachel and I to fly to the Galapagos, we first needed to make it to Ecuador. So it was off to the capital city of Quito to start our journey. We arrived pretty late on the first night, and as such, we just had dinner in the hotel. Which was simple and lovely. And we got free drinks, so we were already loving the country.

The next morning, we woke up to a stunning view of the city. Sadly, our time here was pretty limited as we had to head right out to fly to the Galapagos. But I thought the city looked stunning, with colorful buildings mixed right in with the mountains, and clouds floating among them all. I wish we had more time to explore.

However, on our tour of the Galapagos, we heard an interesting story. Our tour guide was a jacked New Zealander who didn't look like someone to be messed with. And apparently he had been mugged by four guys with machetes just a couple weeks earlier in Quito. Say what? Even he said how dangerous Quito could be.

Needless to say, when we circled back through the city at the end of the trip, we were terrified. No thanks, chief, I'm good! While I do wish I'd seen more of the city, if I ever get back, I hope to view it in broad daylight with a trusted guide.
