For my first big Saturday night out with Dave in London, we got a recommendation to go to the oldest wine bar in London - which then states that this fact likely makes it one of the oldest wine bars in the world. It's on Villiers Street, in between the Embankment and Charing Cross tube stations.
It was established in 1890 "in its present state". As you walk inside and down this rickety old staircase, there are newspaper clippings on the walls from throughout the century, including one of the royal family on King George VI's coronation day (the one from "The King's Speech"). When you get to the basement, half of it is under rocks, making you feel like you're in a cave. They only serve wine (some of it out of barrels behind the bar) and the majority of light comes from the candles burning on the tables.
The low lighting didn't make for great pictures, but you can kind of get the idea. Very fun night out!
Note the ghost hanging out on Dave's right shoulder.
Seeing double...
