Unofficial Monuments

Where: Washington, DC
When: Multiple occasions
With: Dave and others

In addition to the countless monuments all around Washington, DC, there are several buildings that have the age and beauty to be considered a monument, but are serving a more functional purpose. A perfect example of this is Union Station, the city's train station, connecting DC to the greater area and east coast.

The train station was built in 1907 and was inspired by famous classic works of architecture, particularly the Arch of Constantine in Rome. It's hard to capture in photos (particularly as you're rushing to catch a train), but this beautiful entrance hall is long and covered in the arched ceiling, with beautifully detailed carvings and lighting.

Even the ceilings over the metro platforms are stunning and beautiful, both classic and futuristic feeling at the same time.

This is just one example of the "unofficial" monuments of DC, and next time I go, I'll be sure to keep an eye out for the rest.
