Where: Beaufort, South Carolina
When: December 23-24, 2017
With: Dave and Izzy
Well, I feel that I have a slight pattern going on. Sometimes, when I visit a place once, I seem to have a chance to go right back again, but thankfully, always for a different experience. While I felt like I was still recovering from my sister's wedding in Charleston, South Carolina, it was already time to head back down south to celebrate Christmas with my family. And since Christmas isn't complete without our dog, Izzy, it was a road trip to get there. And lo and behold, what made the most sense for a stop off on the trip? The last place left for me in the Book for South Carolina: Beaufort.
Interesting thing about this post is that the Low Country referenced in the title includes several of the towns along the coast line of the state: Kiawah Island, the Sea Islands, and Hilton Head Island. And I have actually been to Hilton Head twice in college, but the fact I hadn't been to Beaufort made me feel like I couldn't confidently check this one off the list. So this was an extra satisfying stop to officially say it was complete.
We got in just past sunset after driving for nine hours from Lexington, KY. It was such a shame. We'd hit some bad weather through the mountains that delayed us just enough to miss seeing this beautiful town in the daylight. However, even in the dark, we could see the Spanish moss hanging over our heads and the antebellum homes covered in Christmas lights and we knew this was going to be a beautiful place.
We stayed at the Rhett House Inn, an old beautiful inn a block from the main street. This town has been a shooting location for many movies, and it seems that the actors always decide to stay at the Rhett House, including Tom Hanks, Barbara Striesand, and Robert Redford, to name a few. It has a gorgeous wrap around porch and beautiful sitting areas, just like out of a movie.
After settling in, we walked to the main street and the waterfront. There was a beautiful walkway along the river, that provided a perfect stroll for us and a great way for Izzy to stretch her legs after such a long car ride.
We grabbed dinner at a restaurant called Saltus River Grill. As it was about 60 degrees, none of the southerners were outside. So we grabbed a table right by their firepit, let Izzy sniff around, and enjoyed some more Low Country Cuisine. On the menu tonight was grilled oysters, she-crap soup, and shrimp & grits. It was outstanding. With a couple glasses of wine, I was definitely in my happy place and forgetting the long drive already.

Upon arriving, we were greeted with a warm welcome and shown to our unbelievable room. It had a screened in porch, perfect for Izzy to hang out outside, investigating the sounds and smells of the South. It also provided the perfect place for a glass of wine and a slice of pie from their kitchen.

The dog friendliness of the area continued to be apparent, as a couple restaurants we passed on our stroll home had "canine menu". It was so lovely there that we debated skipping Florida and spending Christmas here.
To get Izzy a little extra exercise, we also took a stroll through the neighborhoods. There were old churches and cemeteries mixed amongst the grand homes, and with the streetlamps providing some gentle shadowy lighting, it felt like the ghost of a Civil War soldier would appear at any moment. Thankfully, the epic homes provided enough distraction to not get too freaked out.
The next morning, we got up early to enjoy breakfast on the porch at the main house. We had country fried ham, biscuits, and eggs. It was a delightful kick off to Christmas Eve. And Izzy was thoroughly entertained by the squirrels hopping around the trees above her head.
The Inn's garden.
Our room by day (bottom floor).
The best views of the river are from the mansions along the road by the river.
Neighborhood by day! Way less spooky.
The marshes that give the low country its name.
Heading down to the marina.
We took one last stroll down by the riverfront with the Forrest Gump bridge in the background.
And attempted a family photo that Izzy refused to be in.
Beaufort was adorable. It was picturesque, the food was delicious, and I loved it, even after such a short time! The fact that it was so dog friendly made it even more amazing. I have a feeling this will be a common stop over on road trips to come.
