716. New Orleans' Restaurant Scene

Where: New Orleans, Louisiana
When: May 7 - 11, 2011
With: Dave

I am admittedly not great at writing about food. I enjoy eating it, but don't usually remember too much about it. I like the restaurants, but hate taking pictures. And as such, it doesn't make for excellent blog posts.

However, I can say that New Orleans food sticks out in my memory as being amazing. Every. Single. Meal. Even breakfast, I'd think, how good could eggs be? And then I'd proceed to have the best omelet of my life. I don't know how they do it, but every restaurant, oyster shack, and cafe is simply amazing!

The seasoning is what made a lot of the food fantastic. With a ton of flavor and a touch of spice, bland doesn't even enter the vocabulary at a New Orleans restaurant. And when that's coupled with crazy fresh seafood, primarily oysters and crawfish, it is like my personal heaven.

Of the many meals we had in New Orleans, here are the photo highlights.

First off, we have Mother's, open since 1938 and famous for their amazing po' boys. A po' boy is effectively a sandwich on French bread that is pressed panini style. It can be filled with regular deli meats, but it also can have fried oysters and shrimp. I fell in love with these sandwiches in Tallahassee, and I was so excited to get one here.

Mother's is a tiny restaurant that feels more like an old diner than a world famous sandwich shop. One of their most unique sandwiches is called the Debris Po' Boy, scooping up all the bits of juice and trimmings that fell off a freshly carved roast. We grabbed some beers and ordered one Debris and one fried oyster po' boy and dug in to a delicious lunch.

Another staple of New Orleans restaurants is Acme Oyster House. While there's plenty of places in New Orleans to get oysters, this one is the most famous. They were super fresh and prepared pretty much any way you'd like. While I'll always prefer fresh, I did enjoy my first Oyster Rockefeller.

Other than that, let's just say this is what a lot of our meals consisted of: fresh seafood with tons of seasoning and deep fried things. It was amazing.

Two happy kids right now. Any time you need this bib, the meal will be good.

I still dream about the food in New Orleans (especially the crawfish omelette I got from Cafe Beignet). That's a huge deal for me to remember a city for the food, and speaks volumes to how good it is in this city. Simply the best!
