After careful consideration and an eight hour plane ride home from the states where I thoroughly reviewed this 2nd edition of the book, I have decided to amend my quest. The new book is just kinda...better...dare I say. It includes more places, mostly that may not have been ideal travel destinations back in 2003 when the original book came out, but that are fantastic now (I was sold when I saw Croatia was an entry). It also has done away with most hotels as "things to see". While it may be nice to lay your head down on 3,000 count sheets in the same room that Marie-Antoinette stayed in 200 years ago, I'm not much of a hotel person and my bank account would not do well if I was paying $1,000/night to stay at all these places. I also never could quite get behind the fact that Wales had more hotels listed as "things to see" in the original book than things to DO in Wales. In the new version, towns are listed as the "things", with an added paragraph to suggest the hotel as the place to stay while there.
In short, I will be amending and blending my list to get the best of both worlds. Changes will be posted as often as I can get to them. I'm actually feeling way more encouraged by this new edition. More inspiration to see more countries and to leave the big cities for more remote places - not that I needed any more.
