87. Belgian Frites

Where: Brussels, Belgium
When: January 18-20, 2013
With: Dave

I have to admit that the Belgians definitely got my number when it comes to food. While they're famous for many delicious things, one of their main staples is their frites. And as fries hold a very special place in my heart, I used my weekend in Brussels as an opportunity to enjoy them at nearly every meal.

After our train arrived in Brussels, we dropped off our bags at the hotel and headed out for the first order of business: dinner. There was only one meal I had in mind and that was moules frites. It's like meal created just for me: a giant pot of mussels served with a side of fries. So we went to a place just outside the Grand Place that is famous for this simple but delicious meal.

Inside felt like you were in an old school 50's diner. The waiters wear white aprons, the food comes fast, and there's a really casual atmosphere. The traditional way to cook mussels is in white wine with a little bit of chopped onion and celery. The fries are fried twice, making them crispy and delicious for dipping in the mussel sauce. Add on some Belgian beer and you had two very happy patrons.

The other common way for the frites to be served is on their own with a side of dipping sauce. After a night out, we decided this would be the perfect late night snack. We took a 15 minute cab ride to the most famous frites place in Brussels, Maison Antoine. To our great disappointment, it was closed and our mission for frites began. We wandered the streets of Brussels, looking everywhere for a late night shop to fulfill our craving. When we finally stumbled across this small shop, we may have done a little dance of joy while jumping quickly in line.

The frites came out hot and crispy, wrapped in white paper and slathered in Americano sauce which tasted like a spicy ketchup. We started to hungrily gobble the fries down like we'd never eaten before in our lives. We got many funny looks, and my favorite moment was when someone yelled mockingly, in a very fake American accent "I got my fries at the kebaaaaab shop!" Yes we did, thank you very much, and they were delicious.

I wish I could eat like that all the time every day. Amazing.
