Blue Trail Wenlock & Mandeville tour

Where: London
When: August 9, 2012

When you have the Olympic rings hanging off Tower Bridge right outside your office, you very easily get into (and remain in) the Olympic spirit.

To enjoy the Olympics, a group of us from work decided to go on a walking tour of London, following the Wenlock and Mandeville mascots. We chose the Blue Trail, which started right outside our office with Skyline Wenlock.

Continuing along the south bank of the river, we next challenged Maritime Wenlock to a race, just outside the HMS Belfast.

We then headed in towards the Southwark Cathedral, and amid the Team Switzerland celebration party, we found Cathedral Wenlock.

My personal favorite of the night was back towards the river where Pirate Wenlock stood in front of the Golden Hind.

This was one of the more misleading ones since its name, Rainbow Wenlock, didn't indicate what he actually represented at all: a giant map of the UK. So all the Brits pointed to where they were from, and the non-Brits stayed out of the picture.

The walk was doing exactly what it was meant to - getting us out to enjoy London on a beautiful night.

While taking pictures with this Mandeville, some small children thought it was hysterical to photo bomb us doing their best impressions of Usain Bolt.

Next up was Arty Wenlock, who should have been named Stripy Wenlock. It was only right that Emma was alone in the picture in her stripy dress. But Einar needed a picture too, just to show his Wenlock love.

In fact, Einar loved the Wenlocks and Mandevilles so much, he sprinted when he spotted the next one. We found the two of them having a moment.

 This was St. Paul's Mandeville.

And this was the time we thought that Big Face, Little Face should get involved.

In the yard of St. Paul's, we found Telephone Box Wenlock. While pretending to be on our phones for the picture, Einar's actually rang and he answered, throwing us into fits of laughter. I also laughed pretty hard when I noticed Jad photobombing us from the real phone booth in the background. We ended this photo shoot with a "how many people can we fit in a phone booth?"

We then had a romantic hand hold with Sonnet Wenlock.

After all this mascot hunting, it was time for a little bit of actual Olympics. We gathered into a  pub to cheer on Usain Bolt for the 200m dash.

My friends are so accomodating of my artsy photo choices.

To celebrate Bolt's win, we encircled City Gent Wenlock with our own Bolt impressions.

We were disappointed to find that Giant Wenlock was the same size as all the other ones. We hoped this picture made him look a bit larger.

A little bit of fencing with Sir Wenlock.

And then a very long walk to Monument Wenlock. Pure-bred Brits on the right, mutts on the left.

In front of the Tower of London, a very fitting Raven Wenlock.

And then the most disappointing end possible to the night. The last mascot on the tour was Beefeater Mandeville. But he was shut away in the gates of the Tower of London at 10pm, just 30 minutes before we arrived. He was the one we were most excited for, and we didn't complete the tour! So sad!

So instead, we ended the night where we started it - with a beautiful view of Tower Bridge.
