Where: Helsinki, Finland
When: May 19, 2012
With: Nic
Whether self-appointed or internationally recognized, Finland considers itself the design capital of the world. This may be due largely to its famous son, Alvar Aalto (see here) but regardless of him, Finland continues to be on the forefront of everything from houseware design to textile to architecture.
Walking around Helsinki, you can't help but notice the random bits of architecture that stick out in stark contrast against the otherwise European city. For example, we stumbled across a random square that contained a small exhibit of wood work, all meant to be interpretive designs of chairs.
Whether the unique architecture and design elements are in classical or modern form, with serious or funny intent, they really show up everywhere.
Considered to be a prime example of Finnish design, one of the more beautiful buildings in Helsinki is the Hotel Kämp. Unlike our Savoy experience, the Hotel Kämp passed no judgement and welcomed us to have champagne on their terrace.

The design of the city is really unique, so whoever told Helsinki they can claim "Design Capital of the World", I am in full support of it.
