New York Pizza

Where: New York City
When: 2005 and on
With: Lots of people

Ask 100 people what their favorite New York pizza is, and you will no doubt get 100 different answers. It really is just that good. In fact, I daresay it's hard to have a bad slice of pizza in this city. And there's pizza for all occasions: lunch time snacks, iconic establishments, personal favorites, and drunken late night stops. Over my years in New York, I have tried a LOT of pizza. And while I'm biased in that pizza is my absolute favorite food, there are a couple of places that stick out above the rest in my opinion.

My first love upon moving to New York was Big Nick's, right down the street from my first apartment in the Upper West Side and open 23 hours a day (we never did figure out what that one hour was that they were closed...and we tried a lot of them). As the first of many of my friends to have a place in the city, my apartment was usually where everyone crashed after a night out, and Big Nick's was usually a stop on the way home. Considering bars in New York are open until 4am, it wasn't uncommon to find my friends and me here around 4:30-5am, half asleep, intoxicated, and devouring their amazing pizza.

When I started dating Dave, he began taking me on a pizza quest to try the more iconic pizzerias in the city. While they were all fantastic, the one that stands out to me is Grimaldi's in Brooklyn. Located in Dumbo just past the Brooklyn Bridge, the line for this place is insane. And with good reason. While the first time we went (on my birthday with Ashley), we had to eat in the restaurant, the trick is to order ahead (ideally while walking across the Brooklyn Bridge on foot), and pick-up on arrival. In nice weather, take the pizza to a nice spot on the river and enjoy the Manhattan skyline while you devour.

Taking photos while I eat food is not my schtick, so this is all I've got in terms of phorotgraphic evidence of my favorites. But my runners-up include:
  • Bravo Pizza - it's become a chain, but it was my favorite lunch time spot at work. While I am a huge thin crust cheese lover, their Sicilian marinara (or fresh mozzarella, if you can't pass on the cheese) are my favorites
  • John's and Lombardi's: two absolute classic staples, one in the Village, and the other in Little Italy
Drool. New York pizza is something I miss pretty bad. Anywhere else just doesn't quite come close.
