Big Onion Walking Tours

Where: New York City
When: January 5, 2008
With: Suzannah, Rachel, Eug

While recovering from hangovers on New Years Day with eggs, bacon, and mimosas on my couch, Suzannah, Rachel, Eug and I decided we needed to start formally exploring New York City a bit more. In addition to making restaurant plans and batting around ideas, we decided that the following weekend, we'd look into an official walking tour of a neighborhood we wanted to learn more about. Thankfully, the Book offered a suggestion as to the company to select: Big Onion Walking Tours.

The largest walking tour company in New York, it was started by a couple of Columbia graduate students in 1991. However, its size thankfully does NOT mean the groups are big or that there's a flag to be followed. What makes this company appealing is the relatively smaller size of their walking tours, their knowledgable and entertaining guides, and the intimacy with which they explore individual neighborhoods. They consider New York City a big onion, with lots of layers to be peeled back and explored.

We chose to do a tour of Greenwich Village, one of the older neighborhoods in the city that retains the charms of its original layout and buildings (unlike the behemoth skyscrapers to its north or south). We wandered through the Village and learned about some of the inhabitants in the various buildings that have stood for hundreds of years. We ended in Washington Square Park for the day.

I didn't take too many photos on the tour (odd, but I didn't have my big camera yet!), but I did thoroughly enjoy the tour. While it was the only one we did, the four of us did have a few more New York City outings. And this was a great way to kick off our resolution of exploring the city.
