Santa Monica

Where: Santa Monica, California
When: June 1996
With: Dad & Ashley

Following our time in Disneyland on our California road trip, we headed west towards my father's other great love: the beach. In his mind, our time in LA was more of a necessary evil to get close to the water and the Pacific Coast Highway. So instead of staying in the city center of LA, we headed out towards the ocean and stayed in Santa Monica.

My feelings at the time were...well, that of a child. I was disappointed to leave Disneyland, even after three whole days. I was too young to appreciate this gorgeous view from our hotel room, the blue waters, the sandy beach, or the mountains behind them. And in fairness, we only had one night here, so we didn't even get a good beach day in. But I sure am glad we got some photos because looking back, this is just stunning.

And we had a great view of Santa Monica's crown jewel, the Santa Monica Pier.

We didn't get to actually visit the pier that was built back in 1909 (I felt like, what's the point after Disneyland? Eye roll.) I would come to regret this just one year later when the movie Titanic came out, and Jack promised Rose they'd visit the Santa Monica Pier together when they reached America. Suddenly, I was desperate to return.

Bur for this day, we just enjoyed a bit of sunshine before heading to dinner and out of LA the next day.

I did get one visit back as an adult, but just to the beach and again, not the pier. So there's definitely still a lot to be accomplished in Santa Monica.
