Where: Maui, Hawaii
When: June 1995
With: Dad & Ashley
Part II of our vacation to Hawaii was to the island of Maui. Again, this trip took place well before the Book and well before I had any control over my travel plans, so we didn't do much by way of accomplishing any of the recommended activities. But here they are for reference.

Part II of our vacation to Hawaii was to the island of Maui. Again, this trip took place well before the Book and well before I had any control over my travel plans, so we didn't do much by way of accomplishing any of the recommended activities. But here they are for reference.
Our first week on the Big Island was going to be pretty hard to top. Again, remembering this trip through the eyes of a child vs. looking back on the photos as an adult, I see it all so differently. Right off the bat, I wasn't as big of a fan as Maui. The hotel wasn't as cool, it wasn't all-inclusive, and the beach wasn't the same. But looking back on these views, I don't know what I was thinking.
Our hotel was in Ka'anapali, on the west side of the island. From the front of the hotel, we could see the rolling cuts of green mountains formed by the West Maui Forest Reserve.
Most days, this view had a rainbow, which I did find incredible.
The views from the beach on the other side were just as incredible. The turquoise waters of the Pacific were framed by the islands of Lanai and Molokai in the distance.
And because we were on the west side of the island, we got some fantastic sunsets over the ocean - another novelty having grown up on the East Coast.
The beach itself was very pretty, though it wasn't quite my A-Bay on the Big Island.
Most of our time on Maui was spent on the beach. The hotel was not all-inclusive, and since boat trips were out, we mostly just stuck to swimming and playing in the sand.
I definitely didn't remember how turquoise the water was.
My favorite sand castle to build - Snoopy. Sorry to Dad, whose lenses may have been scratched in the making of Joe Cool.
Nyaw. A rare cheesy moment - particularly shocking since she's preventing me from any water-based activity right now.
We got some pool time in as well. This waterslide made me very happy.
Our one day trip in Maui was to a surfing beach for some formal lessons in surfing! Despite growing up on the ocean and being avid boogie boarders, we'd never done this before and I was eager to try.
We started out with a lesson on land, basically learning the seemingly easy moves: lay flat, push up, and then hop up. Simple, right?
The water was perfect for beginners, with small, long waves that broke pretty far out and let us ride in for awhile with minimal jostling. The hardest part was getting the momentum to catch the wave on such a big board, but this was where the instructors helped with an extra push.
Dad was able to watch and document from a long jetty that bordered the water.
His favorite story to tell is how Ashley got right up on her first wave and rode it all the way in. When he cheered for her, she turned around and mouthed "I don't want to do this anymore" with a puss on her face. Oh well.
I did not take to surfing as much as I would have liked to. I am not meant for sports standing on a single platform (i.e. surfing, snowboarding, skateboarding). I just can't move my feet in the right way to control it. But, I did get up, and really, isn't that all that matters?
There were definitely a few wipe outs.
Ashley was too scared of falling in to let herself wipe out.
Though the one wipeout that was caught on film was pretty classic.
Some shots from the beach.
Pretty quickly, our arms got tired, and we were pretty spent. This is why I prefer boogie boarding.
And all in all, that sums up our time in Maui. Lots of beach time that was unappreciated by a couple of uncultured kids, but at least I can appreciate looking back at the photos just how beautiful this island was.
