I love that the queen is the head of the church, and as a result, Good Friday and Easter Monday are public holidays. This results is a lovely, springtime, four-day weekend.
As I was away for the Easter weekend, I had absolutely zero insight into what the Brits do to celebrate the holiday. However, upon returning to my office the Tuesday after the break, I was asked if I had "received an egg for Easter". I donned an incredibly confused look and responded slowly, "As in...did I dye easter eggs?" After my coworkers realized that I had no idea what they were talking about, it was decided that someone needed to get me an "egg". So after lunch, we trekked over to the food store to get an "egg on clearance".
We returned to the office with this wondrous thing: a giant chocolate Cadbury egg (sadly, no creme inside). Apparently, the British tradition is not to dye easter eggs, but to give each other massive chocolate eggs (I guess kind of like how we give chocolate bunnies?) Also I learned that their easter egg hunt is usually to find chocolate eggs, not hard-boiled, dyed ones. I'm glad I hadn't set my hopes on dying eggs this year.
Just a little more British trivia learned from my time over here. Next year, eggs all around.
