First week living in London and my flat!

I have arrived in London to start my 2 years of Brit living! After one week, things are going really well. It's been really nice to have the time to just get myself settled and situated, trying to unpack and get the flat set up and make it homey.

Jetlag wasn't so bad - I didn't sleep on the plane (very happily watched movies the whole trip - Bridesmaids (funnier than expected), Midnight in Paris (really cool concept) and X-Men First Class (way better than expected)). I completely unpacked all 8 suitcases like a beast upon arrival, and (sort of) enjoyed my first dinner on the block with the Roommate- however, as I was at my 28th hour of being awake when we sat down for food, I don't remember much of it. But after passing out at 6pm the first night and not waking up until 7am the next morning, I was cured of all jetlag.

Our neighborhood is very cute. Our street has just about everything you could need - dry cleaners, little restaurants, bodega-like shops with fruits and veggies outside. Lots of pubs in the neighborhood, a short walk from any kind of main store we could need, and about 10 minutes from the tube station.
A few random observations about London living so far:
  • Milk: Blue label does not equal skim. An unfortunate and fattening mistake.
  • Road rage in a British accent = not scary, but sounds rather polite and charming, even when profanity is used.
  • All those years of complaining about people walking on the sidewalk and passing on the left instead of the right ("We're in America! We drive on the right side of the road, so PASS on the right when walking!!") have come back to bite me in the ass.
  • I need to stop thinking in a British accent. It is going to come out of my mouth one of these days, and I just hope I can play it off when it does.
I'll post a bit more about some other stuff I've been doing, but figured I'd give my quick rundown, along with some pictures of the new flat. The Roommate and his mom did well. Still working through getting some furniture. Apparently it takes about 3 weeks for things to be delivered - another observation, customer service here is not quite what we're used to.

First, we'll start with the front door. It has an authentic keyhole with a funny looking key to lock it. You can actually see into our place through it...creeppyyy.

After walking through the front door, directly to your right will be our kitchen. Small, but efficient with a dishwasher AND large fridge/freezer - apparently both are hard to come by in central London.

Turning left through the flat, you will see our main room: the dining area and the TV / couch area. Mom, please ignore the clutter, I am getting a bookshelf.

Next up is the bedroom. We have wall to wall closets, which is very convenient. I have slowly encroached on all of the Roommates's closet space, and I (very efficiently) reorganized his things.

From the other side. This is where you can see the door to the bathroom, and our washer/dryer (hidden in that bottom cabinet).

And finally, the bathroom (complete with an open toilet...oops). My favorite part - the towel warmer on the right - incredible!!

And that is my very first London flat. More pictures to come from the first week, but hopefully, this will satisfy the demands for pictures for now :-)
